The first thing at Grant's Farm is a tram ride thru the deer park to animal watch, kind of like a midwestern safari. I was impressed that Lucas hopped up on the seat and seemed ready for the adventure. That was the easiest part of the ride for me. The rest of what seemed like an extremely long ride, he spent climbing up and down on the seat and climbing all over the place. I was worn out from balancing him and trying to point out the animals, most of which really weren't close enough for a two year old to see. There was one buffalo though that was really cool, rolling in the dirt right next to the tram. Lucas and I were both impressed.
Finally, the tram ride came to an end.
Next up, the animals, most of which you can touch. We started with the little goats - feeding them baby bottles. Lucas wouldn't get down in their enclosure because he hates to get rocks or sand in his sandals. So I carried him with little goats crawling all over me to get to the bottle. By the way, you really need to watch for the goats that sneak up behind you. One tried to eat my purse, my clothes, and Lucas' clothes.
After the goats, Lucas wouldn't walk. He'd only tiptoe around until I took his shoes off and cleaned the sand out. He alternated between wanting to be carried and running ahead of us, almost like he wasn't with us. He spent a long time walking up and down a low wall. I finally got him to move away from the wall toward more animals and he fell into a fence rail and split his lip open. He was upset of course and buried his head in my shoulder and got blood on my dress. Thinking something cold would help, we got him a small cup of Dippin' Dots. He wouldn't try them. I held his arms down and Nana forced some into his mouth. Surprise, he liked them and ate most of the bowl. He's so stubborn sometimes - I can't believe he wouldn't try them.
So then it was finally time for all the "fun" to end and we headed home. I'm still exhausted from our wonderful family activity. It's hard work, but we're making memories every day and I can't wait for our next adventure.
In the car on the 2 hour drive home, Nana said, "it was a really nice day". I have to think she meant the weather, but it truly was a nice day, even though it wasn't quite how I pictured it.
Here's Lucas just getting started looking at the animals.
Can you tell I'm not that thrilled with the goats? Really it's not the one you are feeding, but the ones that sneak up behind you and chew on your clothes.
Lucas liked the goats and wanted to hang out with them, but since he wouldn't get down, it was hard to balance him.
Here are the guys - Lucas and Grandad, running through the mist.
Walking up and down the stone wall. It seemed like millions of times!!!
A camel upclose - right after he fell and split his lip.
He looks like he's been in a fight. And after that happened, I know it felt funny because he kept sticking his tongue out and running it over his lip.
As we were crossing the parking lot to viist the Clydesdales, Lucas was having a wonderful time playing with these orange cones. He was cracking himself up as he knocked them over. He's so goofy.
Here's Lucas with 2 Clydesdales. Isn't the baby cute? (and I do mean the horse) Well, Lucas is cute too!
Here we are posing at the end of our day. As you can probably tell from my story, I'm going to have my hands full as my little bundle of energy continues to grow and change. And I can't wait!
